PROJECT IDEATION

COMING UP WITH AN IDEA

Initially, I brainstormed fields/hobbies of interest to me; this made it easier to search for problems before devising theoretical solutions. Having an understanding on these areas personally helped to tackle specific details for each project idea.

Areas based off of personal hobbies: reading/writing, drawing, food, health, fashion, coding and volunteering. 

Relevant to project:

  • Management/Scheduling application 
  • Desktop and mobile for accessibility
  • Industry/business based project - programming languages e.g. HTML,CSS,JS,PHP, SQL - evolution for application/project 

The following are ideas for consideration.

Reading/writing 

Create a book recommendation application using personal interests of the user; the application would allow users to create their own profiles which would collect data as they use the application (this information would be used to recommend them books in the future). The application would contain a social platform which will allow users to rate/review books, rate authors, talk to each other and discuss trending books. Other entertainment application with similar features can be used as inspiration. (Context: organises user information/profiles, this project is scalable and has room for improvement in the future, it is industry based/development and will require stakeholders’ opinions but I will be able to take control throughout majority of the time, I will be able to use the following programming languages and provide accessibility).

Volunteering

Whilst volunteering at my local mosque, I realised there was no management and the organisation was solely dependent on the team leader (who change every so often). Volunteers were committing many hours of their time without a record system; majority of the time the same volunteers could not be contacted again after completion of their tasks to help out for future events. This application would serve as a management system with scheduling/planning techniques; the system would also contain a social platform capable of notifying users for their upcoming tasks/timings for duties/events etc. (Context: management/scheduling application which will work on stakeholder’s opinions however since I am also part of the community, I can take direct control for lead of project, the application cannot be used elsewhere and will solely/specifically cater the members of mosque (much like a business application) however it has plenty of room for evolution in future).

Ordering system 

Sometimes, it is hard to track all your orders all at once with countless emails from different websites regarding orders being placed/dispatched etc and then users having to actually visit the website if they want to return the order/create a query/message the sellers. This application will allow you to track all your orders in one place and process the mentioned points in a few clicks. The application would thrive on adverts based on the users’ interests which would be collected from the users’ app and other internet usage. (Context: management/organising software, desktop and mobile accessibility, room for scalability and evolution of application, might need a different set of skills/programming languages but the following can be used for front end design development). 

Food

Different supermarkets rate same items of food differently which can confuse the
consumer/buyer and prevent them from actually buying something due to bad reviews or purchasing due to good reviews. This application will collate rating reviews and food products from different supermarkets and allow users to read reviews from other supermarkets and create reviews on our own application. In 2016 alone, the food market was worth approximately £16.1 billion; this alone ensures we will be able to capture a large audience. Users will be able to compare prices/rating/reviews for different items from different supermarkets and filter/sort these. They would be shown offers based on previous searches and shopping lists. (Context: development/management system, will be accessible on desktop/mobile, scalable and room for evolution, programming languages might differ and will use variety of data mining/ data analysis/ collection techniques).


Health

Majority of news articles featured deeply concern heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. An application which can predict diabetes using data mining techniques; this would be done using nearest neighbour algorithm (since diabetes continues to grow daily worldwide; we can use particular data to predict the likely hood with classification methods). There are currently many studies already
implemented for this which can be used to aid the project. (Context: Very different compared to project types of interest however this research/evaluation based project will allow me to learn new techniques and make use of not only previously learnt algorithms/techniques but new modules as well).

Costs

 Several time patient visit healthcare centres with a clinically undefinable condition that cost a lot of money as well as time of healthcare organisation. Most of NHS attempt to keep such patients away from hospital by organising home visits and provide other supports like talk therapy and communitybased services. A report from NHS shows that it costs three times more to treat a 75-year-old and five times more to treat an 80-year-old compared to a 30-year-old. A massive rise in the age factor of elderly people by 2050 when there will be double population of elderly people compared to 2019, is another matter of concern for healthcare organisation. Support talks and community-based services are not enough to stop them visiting hospitals and it will not make any difference to cost and time consumed for treatments.
